Kaikan

Like I have mentioned, Kaikan is the name of the student apartment building where I live. And this picture is taken in front of Kaikan. On the left there is the lobby (common facilities) and the house managers office. On the right is the apartment building itself. There are only international students living at Kaikan. But we have long list of rules to keep us in line with Japanese way of life...well mostly. :D

Kuten olen täällä maininnutkin, Kaikan on asuntolan nimi jossa asun. Tämä kuva on otettu kaikanin edustalta. Vasemmassa laidassa on pääaula (yhteiset tilat ovat siellä) ja asuntolan hoitajan toimisto. Oikealla onkin itse asuntola. Asuntolassa asuu vain kansainvälisiäopiskelijoita, mutta meillä on pitkä lista sääntäjä noudatettavana, jotta eläisimme japanilaisten tapojen mukaan. :D

Here is our flat. Might get cold since we have an outer wall on both sides of our apartment. :P Of course the windows have only one glass and the door is just thin metal with huge gaps around it. We will need to get Finnish on this place before the weather gets colder.

Tässä on meidän kämpämme. Talvellä saattaa tulla viileätä kun molemmin puolin kämppää meillä on ulkoseinä. Ja tietty ikkunat on yksinkertaiset ja ulko-ovi on ohutta peltiä. :P Täytyykin parantaa eristyksiä ja tehdä muita viritelmiä ennen talvea.

Entrance to our flat. When you see a step up on a floor when you enter a house or a room, it usually means that you need to leave your shoes there. Our shoes are placed Japanese way now, so that its easy to step into the shoes when you leave the house.

Sisäänkäynti asuntoomme. Kun Japanissa näkee lattian nousevan asuntoon/huoneeseen astuttaessa, se tarkoittaa että kengät tulisi ottaa pois jalasta ennen kuin astuu korkeammalle lattialle. Kenkämme kuvassa ovat aseteltu japanilaiseen tyyliin, jotta niihin on helppo astua kotoa lähdettäessä.

Here is the bathroom. Just simple and old one, without a fancy warming and ass washing toilet seat.

Kylppärimme. Vanha ja hyvin karu. Ei ole hienouksilla varustettua vessänpönttöä edes.

Then our kitchen corner. We have gas cooker which is really good in my opinion compared to an electric one. But the negative thing is that we do not have an oven. :/ Well at least we have a small grill in it.

Tupakeittiömme. Kaasuhella on kyllä minusta kätevämpi kuin perus sähköhella, mutta ikävä että meillä ei ole uunia tuossa vain pieni grilli.

The trash collection schedule above and lower is instructions where what trash goes. Recycling is rather complicated and even more is the fact that the trash house in front does not have bins for all different kinds of trash. Instead we need to check from that calender that what day we take certain trash out. Hence we have missed out plastic bottle collection day twice and we have a huge pile of bottles now. :P

Roskien lajitteluohjeet alhaalla ja roskien hakupäivät ylhäällä. Roskien kierrätys on kohtuullisen monimutkaista täällä, eri roskaluokkia löytyy monta ja kaikki tietenkin noudetaan vain tiettyinä päivinä. Täällä kun ei ole roskakatoksessa laatikkoa erillaisille roskille vaan meidän pitää viedä oikeat roskat oikeana päivänä roskakatokseen. Olemmekin onnistuneet missaaman kahdesti jo muovipullojen keräyspäivän, joten meilä on isot säkit pulloja nurkassa. :P

This weird control panel is used to get some warm/hot water. When you turn the water warmer on it will instantly warm the water with gas. So there are no hot water boiler in the place. We took some time to figure out how to use it, and then more time to get use to the fact that you need to turn the warm water on every time you need it. But one good thing is that you can adjust exactly what temperature is the water. For example shower gives constant water temperature. :)

Tämä kummajainen on meidän vedenlämmittimen ohjauspaneeli. Eli tuosta täytyy laittaa lämmitys päälle, jos lämintä vettä halajaa. Vesi tosiaankin lämmitetään lennosta kaasulla eikä sähköllä säiliössä kuten esim Suomessa. Tuo vaati hieman opettelua ja totuttelua, mutta positiivisena puolena tuossa on, että vesi todellakin on juuri tietyn lämpöistä koko ajan. (Lämmitystä voi säätää asteittain.

We have freezer, fridge and cooler for veggies. Quite nice thing but old so it consumes great deal of electricity.

Meillä on pakastin, jääkaappi ja kylmäkaappi. Näppärä vekotin, mutta aika vanha joten sähkölaskussa varmasti näkyy.

Our bedroom. Big enough for two people, but  I think its good since the heating is mostly needed during the night time and we only need to heat up this smaller room then.

Makkari. Voisi olla isompikin, mutta toisaalta edullisempi lämmittää pienempi huone, kun lämmitystä tarvitsee eniten yöllä.

Halloween weekend / -viikonloppu

Last weekend we had a Halloween party at Kaikan before going to PEI-bar/Trip-club for their joint Halloween party. I was surprised that almost everyone had a Halloween costume. And those costumes were really good ones. I think most common costume was a witch costume. But otherwise there were all kinds of costumes from ninja to a rock start to a Piccachu to a shower. :D My costume was Facebook (picture below). I got the idea from my friend, Brian, who dressed up as Facebook back in 2009 Halloween when I met him.

I left the party quite early with few others so that it would not be so late when we go to PEI. Plus we wanted to take some purikura-photos. Purikura is a photo booth were you go with your friends to take some photos. What makes purikura different from a normal passport photo booth is that the machine will photoshop the pictures automatically (smoother skin, bigger eyes etc) and then after the photos are taken you can add text, smileys etc to to the photos. Below you can see one of our purikura-photos from that night.

Then it was time for the main party at PEI and bit later we moved to Trip. That evening the both places had nomihoudai (drink as much as you can) evening, which was, like I expected it to be, quite deadly for most of the people. :D Entrance alone would have been 1,500 yen (15€) one drink included but nomihoudai was 3,000 yen (30€). So for an extra 1,500 yen you could drink as much as you can from 9pm until 1am (after 1am the drinks would have costed the normal price). There was also a costume contest, where each participant got up on some boxes in order to show their costumes and get people to cheer as loud as possible. Winner was the person who got the loudest cheer, of course. And surprisingly it was ME! :D Gotta say that now I know how does it feel to be a rock star, when I heard people scream my name loud as they can. xD I won 10,000 yen bar tap to PEI.

One of my friends asked that is Halloween a big thing in Japan. And at least after what I saw on Saturday, its not so big thing as its in Finland. Even in Finland its not that big thing as Vappu for example. Although Halloween was officially on Monday, which I spent recovering from a flu so I cannot say was there people dressed up on that day. But when we walked on the streets on Saturday we "felt like movie stars", like one of my friend described it. I mean, we got some stares any way since we are gaijins but when we wore crazy costumes it was something totally different. Everyone stared us, some cheered for us "Halloweeen!!" and some even came to talk to us and ask if they can take pictures.

Viime viikonloppuna meillä oli Halloween pippalot asuntolalla. Olin yllättynyt, että melkein kaikki olivat pukeutuneet todella hienoihin asuihin. Noidaksi pukeutuminen taisi olla yleisintä tällä kertaa. Ihmisillä oli kyllä kaikenlaisia asuja, ninjasta Piccachuun ja rock tähdestä suihkuun. :D Itse pukeuduin Facebookiksi (kuva alla). Idean sain kaveriltani, Brianilta, joka oli pukeutunut samanlaiseen asuun 2009 Halloweenina kun hänet tapasin.

Lähdimme asuntolan pippaloista ajoissa, jotta ehtisimme hyvissä ajoin eräässä baarissa ja klubilla järjestettävään Halloween juhlaan. Matkalla kävimme purikura-kuvassa. Purikura on valokuvauskoppi, jonne mennään yleensä kavereiden kanssa ottamaan yhteiskuvia. Normaalista passikuva-automaatista se eroaa siinä, että se masiina automaattisesti käsittele kuvia (siloittaa ihon, suurentaa silmiä jne.) ja kuvien ottamisen jälkeen kuviin voi lisätä tekstiä, hymiöitä yms.

Sitten olikin aika mennä PEI/Tripissä järjestettäville Halloween juhlille. Suomesta poiketen juhlissa oli mahdollisuus perus 15€ sisäänpääsyn sijasta maksaa 30€ sisäänpääsy, joka oikeutti juomaan niin paljon kuin haluaa 21.00-1.00 välisenä aikana. Mielenkiintoien idea, tosin Suomessa taitaisi paikka mennä nurin aika äkkiä. Ainakin tuollaisella hinnalla. :D Juhlissa oli myös Halloween-pukukisa, jossa voittaja valittiin perinteisesti huutoäänestyksellä. Ja minähän jollain kummalla voitin sen kisan. Pääpalkinto oli 100€ baaripiikki PEI-baariin.

Eräs kaverini kysyi ennen Halloweenia, että kuinka iso juttu se oikein on Japanissa. Ja ainakin lauantain perusteella ei se ole täällä niin suuri juttu kuin se on Suomessa. Tosin maanantaina podin kotona flunssaa, kun Halloween oli virallisesti, joten en tiedä pukeutuiko sinä päivänä kuinka moni. Lauantaina kun tallustelimme Oitan katuja saimme osaksemme kyllä todella paljon huomiota. Olimme kuin elokuvatähtiä, kuten kaverini asian ilmaisi. Kaikki tuijottivat meitä haavit auki, osa huuteli "Happy Halloween" -toivotuksia ja osa tuli jopa juttelemaan ja kyselemään josko he saisivat ottaa kuvan meistä.

Food weekend

My last weekend revolved around food, which is always a good thing. :D On Friday an American exchange student arranged an Epic Meal Time -party. We all brought nice ready cooked ingredients like rice, meats, noodles, yakitori sticks etc. Then we took all of those foods and put them together! It sure looked epic (pic below) but it tasted better than it looked. If you do not know what Epic Meal Time is all about, check it in youtube.com. ;)

Then on Saturday my school festival team had a food tasting. In the school festival teams consisting of exchange students and tutors will cook foreign foods and sell them to the other students. Our team is doing Chinese food: Gyozas and Ginger Pork. So we made both foods on Saturday afternoon and of course we tasted them. Both foods tasted good, so we were quite successful in making them. This week our team actually decided that we are not going to cook ginger pork at all. Instead we are doing two different types of gyozas, the traditional ones and another ones with cheese and shrimp inside. Seems rather interesting idea, this food making for the school festival. Only thing that I don't like is that we could not pick our own foods what we make, cause I would have wanted to make some Karelian Pies.

On Sunday I went with couple other exchange students to APU (Asian Pacific University) in Beppu to see their school festival. The campus itself is located high up in the mountains 45min bus ride away from Beppu main station. The view from there is really nice, only minus seems to be the never ending cold wind. Actually we did not consider that fact when we left Oita (it was +24C and sunny without any wind), and so we felt quite cold late afternoon. That was also one of the reasons why we left before seeing rest of the bands and the fireworks in the end of the festival. But still the trip was really nice. We ate lot of different kinds of foods and even saw few of the performances at the festival. In this festival they had music and dance performances. We also visited the Haunted House, which was built into one of the university buildings. It was quite nice and managed to spook me couple times. Although couple girls in our group got more value for their money. xD

This Wednesday I went to see a doctor once again. My arm has been hurting (muscle/nerve pain) few weeks now. I went couple times to see the doctors at Oita University's health center, but I gotta say that those visits were rather pointless. Those doctors are like health center doctors of small villages in Finland, so not the best of the best. :D But this time I went to see a doctor at near by private hospital. My tutor once again helped me with the translations. This time his skills were actually really needed since I had to fill bunch of papers and the doctor did not really speak English (Unlike the two at University who talk pretty decent English). This doctor, who actually was the owner of the whole hospital, made finally a proper diagnosis. He said that most likely it is an inflammation of the muscle, so he prescribed some medicines for it. Now after couple days when I am resting my arm it does not hurt, only when I move it to the side. So I assume that the medicine is starting to help. :) Oh and the doctor visit was only 7,400 yen (74€) which is really cheap in my opinion.

Viime viikonloppuni pyöri ruuan ympärillä, mikä ei suinkaan ollut yhtään huono homma. :D Perjantaina eräs amerikkalainen vaihtari järjesti Eeppisen ruokahetken (Epic Meal Time). Kaikki toivat kainenlaisia ruokaeineksiä, jotka löimme sitten sattumanvaraisesti yhteen! Olihan se eväs aika eeppisen näköistä mättöä, mutta yllättävän hyvää se oli. Youtube.comista jos etsii hakusanalla Epic Meal Time löytää useita esimerkkivideoita mistä tällaisessa ruuanlaitossa on kyse.

Sitten lauantaina koulufestivaalitiimini kokoontui laittamaan ruokaa. Koulufestivaaleilla vaihtareista ja tuutoreista koostuvat tiimit laittavat erillaisia ulkomaalaisia ruokia, joita sitten koulumme opiskelijat voivat ostaa. Meidän tiimimme tekee kiinalaista ruokaa: Gyozia and Inkivääripossua, joten valmistimme molempia ruokia lauantaina. Molemmat olivat kyllä herkullisia. Mutta tällä viikolla tuohon tuli muutos ja teemmekin inkivääripossun sijasta toisenlaisia gyozia (juusto ja katkarapu täytteellä). Ainoa asia josta en pidä tässä ruuanlaittojutussa, ettemme saaneet itse tehdä mitä ruokia haluaisimme. Esim itse olisin halunnut tehdä karjalanpiirakoita, jotka olisivat varmasti japanilaisille kelvanneet ;)

Sunnuntaina meinimme muutaman vaihtarin kanssa Beppussa sijaitsevalle APU-yliopistolle, missä oli koulufestivaalit menossa. APUn kampus sijaitsee korkealla vuorilla 45min bussimatkan päässä Beppun asemalta. Kampukselta on komeat näkymät Beppun lahden ylle. Etenkin illalla maisemat oli todella nätit. Festivaaleilla oli kainkenlaista ulkomaalaista ruokaa tarjolla (lähinnä aasialaista ruokaa). Parilla esiintymis paikalla oli myös musiikki ja tanssi esityksiä tarjolla. Kävimme myös kummitustalossa, joka oli kyhätty yhteen yliopiston rakennuksista. Pari kertaa sai säikähtää jopa kummituskierroksella, tosin pari meidän porukan tytöistä saivat kyllä enemmän vastinetta rahoilleen xD

Tänä keskiviikkona kävin taas vaihteeksi lääkärillä. Minua on parin viikon ajan vaivannut hermo/lihaskivut kädessä. Kävin jo kahdella eri lääkärillä koululla, mutta he olivat kuin tyypilliset pikku kylän arvauskeskuksen lääkärit. :D Mutta tällä kertaa kävin yliopiston lähellä olevassa yksityisessä sairaalassa. Lääkärini oli itse asiassa koko sairaalan omistaja. Varmaan oli halunnut palvella minua kun tuntui osaavan hitusen englantia, mutta eipä se ollut ongelma kun tuutorini oli mukana tulkkaamassa. Tulkkausapua tarvitsinkin kaikkien papereiden täyttämisessä. Lääkärin diagnoosi oli että minulla on lihaksessa tulehdus. Nyt olenkin pari päivää syönyt lääkkeitä ja lepokipu on kadonnut eli varmaan nämä ovat oikeat lääkkeet vaivaani. Lääkärillä käynti maksoi 74€ mikä on mielestäni edullista yksityisen vastaanotoksi. Matkavakuutushan tuon tietenkin maksaa.

First weeks / Ensimmäiset viikot

Wow, time sure flies, it has been 2 weeks from my last blog update already. :P School has started going on fully this week. I have now 9 courses per week. My courses are Intercultural communication, Japanese Management, Japanese cultural studies, Introduction to Japanese history, Regional econometric research and then I have 3 courses of Japanese language. Courses are interesting and I was surprised that the teachers want students to take actively part in the lessons. I was expecting that teachers will just talk and we listen.

I have been to karaoke places couple times already, and even done some singing even though do not like singing. For those of you who do not know, but in a Japanese karaoke place you rent a room for your friends where you sing among your friends. In my opinion this is better than the classical karaoke thing where you need to sing in front of an audience. Oh and usually people are so in the mood that everybody sings along, so quite rarely anyone is singing alone, but I guess that is cause you are with your friends in a small room. Btw drinking in karaoke places at least in Oita is quite expensive, so people tend to put few drinks in their backpacks. And even getting drinks from nearest shop is not a problem. Another affordable way to drink is to go to a izakaya (Japanese style bar) or other bar and pay for nomihodai (all you can drink), which is usually limited to 2 hours. But a Finn at least can drink enough in 2 hours to make it worth the money. :D

Just when I wrote last time, I was about to go to  our welcoming party, which was in two parts. First part was the formal part with some speeches and eating, and even one game of rock-paper-scissors. The whole thing was timed with Japanese precision by the minute. After the formal we went to the other dormitory for foreign students, which is on the campus. There we had some snacks and drinks. We had to pay 500 yen (5€) but at least I got more than enough drinks for the money. Of course when that party ended some of us continued to a karaoke place. That was a fun night. :)

And on the very next day that I got my bike, I managed to get a warning for illegal parking of my bike. Apparently they can tow your bike away and that would cost you 3,000 yen (30€), which happens to be the value of my bike. But I have been parking my bike after that, cause I dont wanna lose my bike. :D Last Friday I went to our near by onsen with couple other exchange students and one Japanese friend. He said to us that its okay for a gaijin (foreigner) to go to an onsen even if they have some tattoos. So we wanted to test if this is true, and sure enough Felix got into the onsen with his big tattoos.

Last Saturday we had a trip with tutors. We went with buses to Kunisaki Penisula which is near Oita. There we visited to temples on the mountains, which were both really nice and peaceful places. I especially liked that there was lot of nature around. I even saw my first lake in Japan. Also I saw the Asian giant wasp at the first temple, and have to say that it was big and scary looking. Between visiting the two temples we went for lunch at some local hotel. The lunch was pretty good and big with many dishes. On the way back to Oita we went mandarin picking. There is a farm where you can pick your own mandarins for 200 yen/kg (2€/kg), and what you eat there you dont need to pay. :)

On Sunday few of us went for shopping in Park Place, which is a shopping mall 7,7 km away from our dormitory. The way there is quite hard since there is fairly steep uphills on the way but the way back is quite easy. At Park Place there are many shops and very big super market, which seems to have lot of things. Also food court at Park Place is good. We went to a Korean yakiniku place, where you get to grill your own meat on a grill that is in the middle of your table. The food was quite cheap and super good. Really recommend that place. (Only Korean yakiniku place at Park Place)

This week has gone mostly with studying and hanging out in the common room of our dormitory. Tonight we have an epic meal time party and on Sunday I am going to APU in Beppu, cause they have some music festival there.

Aika todellakin liitää. Edellisestä kirjoituksestani näyttää olevan jo pari viikkoa. :P Koulu on vihdoinkin alkanut täydellä höyryllä. Loppujen lopuksi otin yhdeksän kurssia. Minulla on Intercultural communication, Japanese Management, Japanese cultural studies, Introduction to Japanese history, Regional econometric research ja sitten minulla on kolme japanin kieli kurssia. Kurssit vaikuttavat mielenkiintoisilta ja yllätyin, että täälläkin opettajat haluavat opiskelijoiden osallistuvan aktiivisesti opetukseen. Itse odotin perineisempää opettaja puhuu ja oppilaat kuuntelevat -opetusta.

Olen nyt käynyt pari kertaa paikallisissa karaoke paikoissa. Ne eroavat suomalaisista paikoista siinä, että täällä vuokrataan huone kavereiden kanssa omaan käyttöön eli koko baarin edessä ei tarvitse lauleskella. Muutenkin ihmiset ovat sen verran tunnelmassa mukana, että harvoin kukaan yksinään laulaa vaan koko huoneellinen lauleskelee biisejä. Juominen karaoke paikoissa näyttää olevan melkoisen kallista (alkaen 7€ drinkki tai bisse), joten väki yleensä pysähtyy kaupassa matkalla ja ostavat reppuunsa pari tölkkiä ennen karaokeen menoa. Kesken kaiken kaupassa pistäytyminenkin onnistuu vallan mainiosti. Toinen vaihtoehto edukkaaseen juomiseen on mennä baariin joka tarjoaa nomihodai:ta (juo niin paljon kuin haluat), mikä yleensä on rajoitettu kahteen tuntiin. Mutta siinä ajassa ehtii juoda hyvinkin rahoilleen vastinetta. :D

Viimeksi kun kirjoittelin tänne olin juuri menossa meidän tervetuliaisjuhlaan. Juhlassa oli ensin virallinen osa, joka oli japanilaiseen tapaan aikataulutettu minuutilleen. :D Virallinen osa sisälsi puheita, syömistä ja jopa kivi-sakset-paperi-pelin pelaamista. Seuraavaksi siirryimme koululla sijaitsevalle asuntolalle, jossa meille tarjottiin naposteltavia ja juomisia. Jälkimmäiseen osaan piti maksaa 5 euron sisäänpääsy, mutta se oli kyllä hintansa väärtti. Osa meistä jatkoikin iltaa sitten läheiseen karaoke paikkaan.

Ai niin, heti seuraavana päivänä, kun ostin pyöräni, sain huomautuksen väärinpysäköinnistä. :D Enpä osannut moista odottaa, mutta täällä voi saada sakotkin, jos pyörä "hinataan" pois. Sakko on tuolloin noin 30€.


Viime lauantaina teimme reissun tuutoreidemme kanssa busseilla Kunisakin niemimaalle, joka on Oitan lähellä. Vierailimme siellä kahdella temppelialueella korkealla vuorilla. Molemmat olivat kivoja ja rauhallisia paikkoja. Erityisesti pidin, että siellä oli paljon luontoa lähellä. Näinpä jopa ensimmäisen japanilaisen järvenikin. Näin myös Aasianjättiläisampiaisen (en tiedä oikeaa suomenkielistä nimeä sille), ja täytyy kyllä myöntää, että se ampiainen oli todellakin ISO ja pelottava. Tuon ampiaisen takia kuolee vuosittain kymmeniä ihmisiä Japanissa. Tempelivierailuiden välissä kävimme lounaalla eräässä hotellissa, jossa meille tarjottiin kelpo monen ruokalajin lounas. Paluumatkalla vierailimme myös mandariinitilalla, jossa poimimme mandariineja. Paikanpäällä syödyt mandariinit eivät maksaneet mitään, mutta kotiin viedyt maksoivat 2€/kg, mikä on halpa hinta Japanissa.

Sunnuntaina kävimme muutaman kaverin kanssa shoppailemassa Park Placessa, joka on 7,7 km päässä sijaitseva ostoskeskus. Menomatka oli kohtuu rankka pitkine ylämäkineen, mutta paluu matka olikin sitten hieman kevyempi. Park Placessa on kohtuullinen valikoima eri kauppoja sekä iso supermarketti, jossa on mukavan iso valikoima. Ruokailu alue on myös hyvä Park Placessa. Päädyimme syömään korealaiseen yakiniku -ravintolaan, jossa omat lihat grillataan pöydän keskellä olevassa grillissä.

Tämä viikko on mennyt opiskellessa ja asuntolamme kerhohuoneella hengailessa. Tänään olisi luvassa sitten eeppiset ruokamätöt (Epic Meal Time) ja sunnuntaina tarkoitukseni oli vierailla APUn kampuksella Beppussa, kun siellä on ilmainen musiikkifestivaali.

The first week of school / Ensimmäinen kouluviikko

Now the first school week is over! :) The courses seem to be quite interesting. In Japanese lessons I feel myself bit stupid but that's nothing new to my Japanese studies. The teachers seems to speak pretty understandable English which was more than I expected. But then on info sessions for exchange students -.- I understand that most people do not speak English here but they could at least have all their handouts in English. But like today's tutor & exchange student meeting, the handouts had couple words in English and even those did not help at all. So tutors here have a LOT more work to do than back in Finland since they have to translate lot of things. Of course I understand that all the matters in the University that concerns mostly the local students are in Japanese, but I would at least expect the international things to be in English also. :D

This brings me to the Japanese way of thinking. "Just because things are" is rather common way to think here. So if something is not nice or does not work as well as it could, people just stick with it rather than complaining about it and trying to change things. Do not get me wrong, in some cases this can be good too. So I just try to take a deep breath and relax when things get complicated.

Like some of you might know that Japan is a country where people tend to use cash only, and it is very true. One thing that you might expect then is that there are ATMs all around for convenience, but then you are mistaken. ATMs are in my opinion rare as in Finland or even more rare, but what makes it more inconvenient is that most ATMs accept cards of one or two banks. And to make things bit more difficult for a foreigner only 7/11's ATMs seem to accept foreign cards. You might read between the lines that I spent over one hour in the looking for an ATM one rainy afternoon just cause I forgot to withdraw money. Finally I gave up and went back to home where there is a 7/11 near by. The land of inconvenience comes to my mind on quite many things. :D

Also the Japanese efficiency is a myth to me...maybe it means that how relentlessly they fill forms after another and ran from office to another. xD I have filled so many papers with same information not just to different place but even within school, so do not expect that information would flow to different departments and such.

Life is slowly shaping up here. I got a bicycle finally so going around is easier and faster. Also we have now a cheap rice cooker to make yummy rice. ^^ We mastered the warm water, clothes washing, recycling things and other basic necessities of life.

One interesting difference here is years in official documents. In official documents like in the bank, you need to put your birth year and current year according to the Japanese way. Years here go according to the Emperor, for example now its 23rd year of the current Emperor and I was born on the 58th year of the previous Emperor. Japanese seems to love wrap things into plastic. Small shops pack everything into plastic bags, and even different bags if you for example buy lemonade and deodorant on the same time. Then candies are many times individually packed even though they are inside of a cardboard box which is usually wrapped in plastic also. :D So word of a warning if you plan to come to Japan and you feel for the environment.

But now I need to get ready for our welcoming party. In the mean time I will try to think of things that I have forgotten to write about. :D Also I am open to suggestions if you want to know about some certain things...I can at least try to find out the answers.

Kouluviikko on vihdoinkin ohi! :) Kurssit vaikuttavat mielenkiintoisilta ja jopa opettajien englanti on kohtuullisen ymmärrettävää. Japanin tunneilla tunnen itseni normaaliin tapaan tyhmäksi, mutta jospa se tästä helpottaisi. :D Siitä yllätyin, että koulun infot vaihtareihin liittyvissä asioissa ovat monesti pelkästään japaniksi eikä edes jaettavat monisteet ole englanniksi. -.- Eli tuutorit ovat täällä työllistetympiä kuin Suomessa, kun joutuvat noi infotkin kääntämään. Ymmärrän toki, että paikallisia opiskelijoita koskevat asiat ovat japaniksi, mutta olisin odottanut vaihtareita koskevien asioiden olevan englanniksi kuten TAMKissa.

Tästä tulikin mieleeni japanilaisten ajattelutapa, jota tämä lause hyvin kuvaa: "Asiat vain nyt ovat niin". Täällä ei ihan heti ilmeisestikkään valiteta tai haeta asioihin muutosta vaikka kuinka asiat olisivat huonosti tai hankalasti. Toki tämä on joskus hyväkin asia. Joten yritän vetää syvään henkeä ja ottaa rennosti, kun asiat ovat monimutkaisia tai käsittämättömiä.


Kuten jotkut teistä varmaan tietävät, Japanissa käytetään enimäkseen käteistä. Siitä hätäinen suomalainen saattaisi päätellä, että automaatteja on sitten joka nurkalla helpottamaan sitä käteisen saantia. Mutta väärässähän sitä silloin on. Itse asiassa täällä tuntuu olevan ehkä automaatit jopa harvemmassa kuin suomessa, ja niistäkin yleensä saa vain yhden tai kahden pankin korteilla rahaa. Ulkomaalaiset kortit toimivat sitten vain 7/11-kauppojen automaateilla. Tämä tuli opittua eräänä sateisena iltapäivänä kun tarvoin reilun tunteroisen ympäriinsä etsien automaattia, kun en muistanut nostaa rahaa edellisenä päivänä. Luovutin sitten lopulta ja menin takaisin kotiin, jonka lähistöltä sain sitten rahaa läheisestä 7/11stä.

Japanilainen tehokkuus on alkanut minusta tuntumaan myytiltä...ehkä se tarkoittaakin kuinka sinnikkäästi japanilaiset jaksavat täyttää lomakkeita toisensa jälkeen ja juosta toimistosta toiseen. xD Olen täyttänyt niin moneen paperiin samat tiedot, että olen laskuissa jo seonnut. Jopa koululla tarvitsee samat tiedot ilmoittaa eri paikkoihin. Eli ei täällä kyl tieto liiku osastolta toiselle.


Elämä alkaa kuitenkin nyt asettua uriinsa vihdoin. Sain hommattua vihdoin polkupyörän, jotta pääsee kulkemaan helpommin ja nopeammin ympäriinsä. Riisinkeitinkin on nyt hankittuna että saa nauttia herkullisesta riisistä kotonakin. Olemme myös kämppiksen kanssa oppineet japanilaiset salat lämpimään veteen, vaatteiden pesuun, kierrätykseen ja sen sellaiseen.

On myös mielenkiintoista, että täällä käytetään virallisissa papereissa japanilaista ajanlaskutapaa. Eli vuodet menevät keisarien mukaan. Esim nyt eletään tämän keisarin 23:tta vuotta ja minä olen syntynyt edellisen keisarin 58:s vuosi. :D Sitten jos ympäristö on lähellä sydäntä ei kannata järkyttyä, jos Japaniin eksyy. Kaikki pakataan muoviin ja monesti moneen kertaan. Tavarat tietty pakataan muovipusseihin, joskus jopa useampaan esim jos ostat limpparia ja deodoranttia samalla.

Mutta nyt on aika valmistautua Tervetuloa-juhlaan. Koetan taas miettiä lisää kirjoitettavaa ensi kerraksi.

A fire drill / Paloharjoitus

On Sunday we had a mandatory fire drill. Everybody gathered in front of Kaikan (my apartment building) where two firemen were waiting for us. Also some of the neighbors and couple local TV-reporters were there (Although we were not told when that would air in the TV). First we could try out in an earthquake simulator what a level 7 (on Japanese scale) earthquake would feel like. I have actually been on a such simulator and the feeling is quite weird when the ground is moving and shaking under you and you cannot escape it. Also we got instructions what to do if an earthquake occurs. If there would be a major earthquake we would need to gather to the nearest evacuation center, which is luckily really close to Kaikan at a local school.

Then we got instructions how to use a fire extinguisher and three people got a change to put out a real fire. After that we gathered inside to watch couple videos which demonstrated earthquake's and tsunami's force. But I guess everyone had already seen videos of the tsunami that struck this March. Finally we got to see and feel what kind of accommodation and food there are when you go to an evacuation shelter. This drill was quite interesting event and at least everyone knows now what to do. And the typical thing happened with the English translation...Lot of Japanese sentences were translated to few words in English :D

In the afternoon I went again walking around to see the city. I found some nice parks along Shichibu river. At one point in the middle of my photo taking one older guy came to talk to me and ask where I am from and such typical things. I managed to answer him, but I could really see that I need to read lots of words -.- Oh and he also asked that don't I feel cold when I had only a t-shirt and shorts on, but I answered that "No, I am from Finland" :D It was about 20C and little bit windy, so quite cold for the locals. Although I have to admit that in the morning it was cold in our hall. But it did not surprise me that much since they do not really have any idea here how to make warm houses. :P

Sunnuntaina meillä oli pakollinen paloharjoitus. Kokoonnuimme Kaikanin (asuntolamme eteen), jossa meitä odotti kaksi palomiestä, sekä naapuruston väkeä ja jopa pari hemmoa paikalliselta TV-kanavalta. (Ei meille tosin kerrottu million tuosta tulee juttua telkkariin) Ensin oli mahdollisuus kokeilla maanjäristyssimulaattoria, jossa simuloituun 7-tason järistystä (japanilaisella asteikolla). Itse en mennyt kokeilemaan, kun olen kertaalleen jo ollut moisessa vekottimessa. Tunne ei ole mikään miellyttävin, kun maa jalkojen alla liikkuu ja tärisee kuin viimeistä päivää. Saimme tietenkin ohjeita miten toimia maanjäristyksen tms katastrofin sattuessa. Meidän pitäisi kokoontua paikalliseen evakuointikeskukseen, jos isompi katastrofi pääsisi yllättämään. Lähin evakuointikeskus on onneksi tuossa kiven heiton päässä.

Sitten meitä ohjeistettiin jauhesammuttimen käytössä ja kolme meistä pääsi kokeilemaan tulen sammuttamista niillä. Seuraavaksi katselimme pari videota tsunamien ja maanjäristysten voimasta, joka oli varmaan monelle jo tuttua viime kevään uutisoinneista. Lopuksi pääsimme kokemaan millaiset oltavat evakuointikeskuksessa on ja maistoimme jopa hätäruokaakin. Tapahtuma kokonaisuutenaan oli ihan mielenkiintoinen ja ainakin väki tietää miten toimia, jos jotain sattuisi.

Iltapäivällä menin kävelylle tutkimaan kaupunkia. Löysin mm kivoja puistoja Shichibu-joen varrelta. Tulipa minulle yksi vanhempi herra juttelemaankin. Onnistuin jopa vastailemaan hänen kysymyksiinsä vaikka huomasin kyllä, että tarvitsee kovasti lukea sanoja taas, kun kaikki ovat jotenkin haihtuneet päästä. Ne vähät jotka sinne ovat tarttuneet. Sitten kyseinen herra vielä kysyi, etteikö minulla ole kylmä, kun minulla oli vain t-paita ja shortsit. Vastasin vain ettei ole kun olen suomalainen. :D Eilen oli noin 20C ja hieman tuulista, ja tämähän on jo paikallisille kylmä ilma. Vaikka täytyy myöntää, että eteisessäni oli aamulla kylmä. Mutta se ei ollut suuri yllätys, kun täällä ei tiedetä mitään lämpimien talojen tekemisestä. :P
